The concept of coevolution is reviewed and a model is developed in an
attempt to make the concept operational. The location, scale, and timi
ng of economic activities in a buffer zone to a park or preserve are r
elated to an index of biodiversity. Coevolution would occur if a traje
ctory of activities would in turn result in ''acceptable'' trajectorie
s for net revenue and the index of biodiversity. The concept and model
is used to evaluate alternative rates of timber harvest from the mona
rch butterfly preserves in Mexico.
