Various zirconia were prepared from ZrOCl2.8H2O by the addition of aqu
eous ammonia and potassium hydroxide; the effect of the catalyst prepa
ration on the oxidative coupling of methane over zirconia was studied.
The selectivity to such C2 compounds as ethylene and ethane was stron
gly influenced by the pH of the preparative solution of ZrOCl2.8H2O, N
H3 aq, and KOH, as well as the sequence of the addition of each hydrox
ide during the preparation of the catalyst.
