The phase equilibria distribution of naphthalene between CO2, water, a
nd poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) blo
ck copolymer micelle phases is examined experimentally and predicted s
emiquantitatively using a molecular thermodynamic model. The predictio
ns treat the poly(propyleneoxide) micelle core as a ''pseudophase'' re
sembling an ether. The favorable distribution coefficients at pressure
s as low as 70 bar suggest that CO2 is appropriate for regenerating bl
ock copolymer micelles used for concentration of trace organics in dil
ute aqueous solutions.
