Tc. Norman et Aw. Norman, CONSIDERATION OF CHEMICAL MECHANISMS FOR THE NONPHOTOCHEMICAL PRODUCTION OF VITAMIN-D3 IN BIOLOGICAL-SYSTEMS, Bioorganic & medicinal chemistry letters, 3(9), 1993, pp. 1785-1788
Although most higher animals rely upon sunlight to convert 7-dehydroch
olesterol into the prohormone vitamin D3, the mechanism(s) by which fi
sh and subterranean animals generate this seco steroid are presently u
nknown. This article proposes four nonphotochemical mechanisms which c
ould be operative in appropriate biological systems to support the pro
duction of this essential hormone.
