Ae. Hill et Eg. Mitchelsonjacob, OBSERVATIONS OF A POLEWARD-FLOWING SALINE CORE ON THE CONTINENTAL-SLOPE WEST OF SCOTLAND, Deep-sea research. Part 1. Oceanographic research papers, 40(7), 1993, pp. 1521-1527
A well-defined core of high salinity (>35.36 PSU) water was observed o
n the upper continental slope west of Scotland between August 1987 and
February 1988 and it is identified with the poleward-flowing Scottish
continental slope current. Core salinity decreased in the northward d
irection consistent with mixing with surrounding fresher waters. The c
ore had theta-S characteristics of North Atlantic Central Water and la
y close to the Eastern North Atlantic Water (ENAW) theta-S curve. This
, therefore, excludes the alternative possibility that it is of Medite
rranean origin.
