Pq. Zhang et al., A PITTING MECHANISM FOR PASSIVE 304 STAINLESS-STEEL IN SULFURIC-ACID MEDIA CONTAINING CHLORIDE-IONS, Corrosion science, 34(8), 1993, pp. 1343
The pitting behavior of passive 304 stainless steel in 0.25 M Na2SO4 m
edia of pH 1 containing chloride ions of different concentrations has
been investigated using EIS technique. The characteristics of measured
impedance spectra have been analysed. It is proposed that an intermed
iate complex (MOHCl)com will form in both the pit initiation and propa
gation stages. The reaction mechanism models for pit initiation and pr
opagation, and an equivalent circuit model to simulate the electrode i
mpedance in pit propagation stage have been suggested. The factors whi
ch control the pit growth kinetics have been discussed.
