Rupture of the urinary bladder of newborn foals is thought to occur wh
en pressure is applied to a distended bladder during passage through t
he maternal pelvis. Although rupture of the bladder in utero has been
reported, the histologic description of this condition has been inadeq
uate. This report provides a histologic description of bladder rupture
associated with atrophy of smooth muscle fibers in the bladder wall a
t the site of rupture in a newborn foal.
