Abstract
Three commercial black-and-white films were investigated, one of which (Exposure Index (EI) 400) employed conventional grain technology, whe reas the other two films (EI 400 and 3200) made use of tabular grain t echnology. In order to identify structural differences between the mat erials and their effect on the signal-to-noise properties, as an overa ll criterion for the performance, basic sensitometric and granularity measurements were combined with the investigation of noise power spect ra, the mass of developed silver per unit area, together with qualitat ive and quantitative observations and photomicrographs.
