An error analysis is furnished for the spatial approximation via the f
inite element method of certain nonlinear time-dependent problems eman
ating in the theory of viscoelastic solids. Numerical examples are giv
en, first for a model equation, and then for numerical equilibrium sol
utions in cases of a nonconvex 'double-well' potential and a convex po
tential, the latter derived from the nonconvex one via 'relaxation' by
an 'equal area' construction.
