Digital signalling is the preferred form of signalling because of its
well known and now easily realizable merits. The techniques for digita
l communication in continuous noise are well engineered. Serious probl
ems arise when noise is impulsive. This form of noise severely degrade
s the system performance and calls for more complicated types of noise
reduction techniques, optimum receiver and error control coding. This
paper briefly presents the work carried out in this area by the autho
rs and emphasizes the role that the impulsive noise plays in the desig
n of digital communication systems.
