Abstract
The Baylis-Hillman reaction between crotononitrile and benzaldehyde yi elds 2-(hydroxy-phenyl-methyl)-but-2-enenitrile 5 as a mixture of E- a nd Z-isomers. The ratio between these isomers is dependent on the solv ent, the pressure and the catalyst used in the reaction. The study of these effects revealed some new aspects about the mechanism of the Bay lis-Hillman reaction.
