The National Temporal Bone, Hearing, and Balance Pathology Resource Re
gistry has been established with funding provided by the National Inst
itute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders of the National In
stitutes of Health. The registry is meant to serve as a national resou
rce for researchers and the public to stimulate and facilitate human o
topathologic research. It will maintain a computerized database of cur
rently active and inactive temporal bone and auditory brain-stem colle
ctions throughout the United States. In addition, it will encourage hu
man temporal bone research by disseminating pertinent information, dev
eloping and fostering temporal bone professional educational activitie
s, implementing a national temporal bone acquisition network, and enco
uraging investigative collaborations in the study of the human tempora
l bone and brain structures. It will also identify otopathologic colle
ctions at risk of being discarded or lost and will develop mechanisms
and strategies to conserve them.
