Poling nonlinear optical materials using light is reported. The new me
thod, which combines a light- and an electrical-field effect and is ef
fective on glassy solid-state materials, could in future be integrated
into standard lithographic technology to produce, for example, nonlin
ear optical waveguides by irradiating through a mask when the electric
field is switched on.
