Jr. Porter, REINFORCEMENTS FOR CERAMIC-MATRIX COMPOSITES FOR ELEVATED-TEMPERATUREAPPLICATIONS, Materials science & engineering. A, Structural materials: properties, microstructure and processing, 166(1-2), 1993, pp. 179-184
The efficacy of short fiber reinforcements (SiC whiskers) to inhibit c
reep deformation in a polycrystalline ceramic (Al2O3) is described and
proposed models of their observed behavior are introduced. Equivalent
experimental creep data are not yet available for the oxide-oxide con
tinuous-fiber-reinforced composites that are in development. However,
the fibers that are being developed for such composites have been char
acterized; strength, creep and creep rupture data are becoming availab
le and recent results are reported here. Fabrication of composites wit
h these fibers requires new interfacial coatings that are in developme
nt.
