Abstract
The efficacy of short fiber reinforcements (SiC whiskers) to inhibit c reep deformation in a polycrystalline ceramic (Al2O3) is described and proposed models of their observed behavior are introduced. Equivalent experimental creep data are not yet available for the oxide-oxide con tinuous-fiber-reinforced composites that are in development. However, the fibers that are being developed for such composites have been char acterized; strength, creep and creep rupture data are becoming availab le and recent results are reported here. Fabrication of composites wit h these fibers requires new interfacial coatings that are in developme nt.
