The radioactivity of fine papers has been studied through gamma-ray sp
ectroscopy with an intrinsic Ge detector. Samples of paper from Europe
an and North American sources were found to contain very different amo
unts of Ra-226 and Th-232. The processes which introduce radionuclides
into paper are discussed. The radioactivity from fine papers makes on
ly a small contribution to an individual's annual radiation dose; neve
rtheless it is easily detectable and perhaps. avoidable.
