The decay of superdeformed rotational bands is studied within the fram
ework of the compound mixing model, in which the intensity loss is gov
erned by the tunneling probability between the superdeformed and the n
ormal potential well, the electromagnetic transition rates and the lev
el density of normal compound states. The tunneling probabilities are
calculated microscopically for 30 superdeformed bands, taking into acc
ount pairing and shell effects. The calculated intensities are compare
d with experiment for the cases of 152Dy and 192Hg, which are represen
tative of the A almost-equal-to 150 and 190 regions.
