Jp. Harmon et al., STABILITY OF UV VISIBLE TRANSMISSION SPECTRA OF CROSS-LINKED POLY(METHYLPHENYLSILOXANE) AFTER GAMMA-IRRADIATION - A NOTE, Polymer degradation and stability, 41(3), 1993, pp. 319-322
Gamma irradiation is known to induce a bathochromic shift in the UV/vi
sible transmission spectra of glassy polymers. This shift, which is of
ten primarily due to formation of free radical color centers, can decr
ease, or anneal with time after irradiation. The effect of aging on th
e UV/visible spectra of silicone elastomer, poly(methylphenylsiloxane)
(PMPS), was compared to that of a glassy polymer, poly(benzyl methacr
ylate) (PBMA). Radiation induced a slight, initial, bathochromic shift
in the transmission spectra of the elastomers. This shift became more
pronounced after aging for one year. In contrast, PBMA exhibited a pr
onounced, initial bathochromic shift upon irradiation which diminished
considerably after aging for one year.
