This paper gives an overview of the recent developments in the field o
f the political economy and its applications to agricultural policies.
It highlights the interaction between economic and political markets,
political preferences, the influence of lobbying groups, voters and p
oliticians, and the causes of (agricultural) protection. It discusses
possible model specifications and their outcomes. Special attention is
given to the impact and empirical results of political economy studie
s of the Common Agricultural Policy. The paper concludes with a resear
ch agenda.
