An alga from Corral, southern Chile, represented by an ample collectio
n of cystocarpic and tetrasporic specimens, is identified as Rhodophyl
lis centrocarpa (Montagne) comb. nov. [= Sphaerococcus (Rhodymenia) la
ciniatus var. centrocarpus Montagne 1839; type locality, Valparaiso].
Rhodophyllis acanthocarpa (Harvey) J. Agardh, a species occurring in t
he cold temperature waters of New Zealand and Macquarie Island, is mer
ged with B. centrocarpa on the basis of similarity of vegetative and r
eproductive structure,
