A review of the existing literature on human migration reveals relativ
ely few studies that explicitly examine the relationships between publ
ic policy decisions and human migration flows. The surveyed literature
includes studies of national policies, such as defence spending, migr
ation subsidies and intergovernmental transfers, as well as sub-nation
al policies, such as welfare and unemployment benefits, state and loca
l taxes, education and other public services. Suggestions for incorpor
ating public sector information into existing migration analysis frame
works and further areas of research are provided.
