A water-soluble, naphthalene-containing beta-cyclodextrin has been syn
thesized by reaction of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthalene sulfonic acid (disodiu
m salt) with heptakis(6-bromo-6-deoxy)-beta-cyclodextrin. Lifetime, fl
uorescence polarization, and solvent studies show the presence of main
ly monomer fluorescence emission with a small amount of excimer. They
also show that energy migration occurs. Quenching studies show that si
nglet energy transfer from the naphthalene substituents to a suitably
included acceptor molecule can occur.
