This paper describes the development of one approach to neurochemical
research into schizophrenia, from a search for abnormal concentrations
of a psychoactive compound to the finding of abnormalities of markers
for GABA and glutamate neurotransmitter systems in brain tissue from
schizophrenic patients. The dopamine hypothesis of schizophrenia has p
layed a central role in the formulation of the research strategies use
d in this work.
