A simple modification to the Shirley-type inelastic line shape is prop
osed. The modification results in a sloping background contribution ('
tail') and a non-infinite inelastic tail area. Far from the photopeak
the present tail shows Tougaard-type behaviour, but in the vicinity of
the photopeak it deviates significantly from the Tougaard-type tail U
sing the 'universal' constants derived in the frame of the Tougaard mo
del, universal 'tail height' and 'tail slope' parameters are derived.
