Abstract
A lignin model compound beta-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-3,4-dimethoxyacetophen one (I) was subjected to Co-60 gamma irradiation and pulse radiolysis under different conditions (dose, medium, pH). Interaction with hydrox yl radicals resulted in aryl hydroxylation, fragmentation, and cleavag e. A hydroxylation-cleavage pathway was found at all pH values. At alk aline pH, fragmentation reactions were also observed. The predominant reaction with solvated electrons was fragmentation of the beta-aryl et her bond followed by cleavage reactions.
