Propylbenzilylcholine mustard covalently labels the muscarinic choline
rgic receptor through a pronase-susceptible linkage. Chemical characte
rization of the tritiated compound released by pronase from the solubi
lized receptor suggest that it corresponds to the ligand lacking its (
2,2-(diphenyl), 2-hydroxy)-acetate moiety due to a spontaneous intramo
lecular hydrolysis. The labelled compound is released only from the un
folded receptor and by esterolytic agents.
