Following earlier discussions of the roles played by memory in oral an
d literate societies, this paper distinguishes between inscribed and i
ncorporated practices in the process of cultural transmission. Instead
of adopting the distinction between literate and non-literate societi
es, it shows how different modes of cultural transmission can be assoc
iated with different kinds of political strategy and with different fo
rms of religious life.
