Abstract
Chronotypes are the models through which time takes on practical or co nceptual significance. This paper explores the tensions between two di fferent chronotypes in the prehistoric archaeology of Bulgaria, one es sentially linear and the other cyclical. Their development is traced i n relation to the pattern of settlement, the subsistence economy, soci al organization, the treatment of the dead and development of calender s and record keeping.
