Glyphosate (N-phosphonomethyl-glycine) herbicide samples were analysed
qualitatively using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) thro
ugh derivatization with pentafluoropropionic anhydride plus trifluoroe
thanol. Besides the expected glyphosate perfluoroacetylated derivative
, other compounds were observed and identified using this technique an
d MS alone with the direct inlet system (DIS). Three processes are pro
bably involved in the formation of these products: 1) incomplete deriv
atization; 2) glyphosate degradation during the reaction; 3) traces of
chemical impurities in the pesticide sample.
