We present the first test of the application of the parallel plate cha
mber principles for the design of a very fast and radiation-hard iron/
gas sampling calorimeter, suitable for very forward regions in detecto
rs for LHC, based on the use of thick iron plates as electrodes. We ha
ve built a one cell prototype consisting of three parallel thick iron
plates (17 mm each). Results on efficiencies and mean collected charge
for minimum ionizing particles with different gases are presented.
