Sa. Klumpp et al., CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS IN INFANT RHESUS MACAQUES INFECTEDWITH SIV(SMM) BY MATERNAL TRANSMISSION, Journal of medical primatology, 22(2-3), 1993, pp. 169-176
Three of 12 infant rhesus macaques became infected at 9 to 12 months o
f age with SIVsmm through maternal-infant transmission. Clinical probl
ems seen in one or more infants included decreased CD4 cells, hypergam
maglobulinemia, diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, bacterial infections, a
nd terminal respiratory and CNS problems. Gross and histologic lesions
due to both primary SIV infection and opportunistic infections were o
bserved. The SIV-infected infants had clinical, immunologic, and patho
logic similarities to those seen in pediatric HIV infection.
