Spectral analysis provides a quantitative method for describing oscill
atory zoning patterns (OZP) in crystals in terms of self-affine fracta
ls. An OZP may be characterized by its fractal dimension, a quantitati
ve measure of the nonrandom nature of the pattern. Any model of oscill
atory crystallization must reproduce the quantitative characteristics
(fractal dimension, compositional variations) of the observed OZP.
