Abstract
The problem of the onset of convection in a cylindrical annulus with c onical end boundaries in the presence of an azimuthal and a radial com ponent of a magnetic field is considered. It is shown that the effect of the radial component on the convection rolls can be quite different from that of the azimuthal component. Convection rolls with low azimu thal wavenumbers are preferred in certain regions of the parameter spa ce. Implications of the analysis for planetary applications are briefl y discussed.
