In this paper an equilibrium situation with an external potential held
is studied for reacting mixtures of materials of arbitrary symmetry (
usually ''non-fluids'', e.g solids). It is shown that the divergence o
f the sum of the potential and a tensorial quantity (Eshelby or chemic
al potential tensor) is zero for this mixture in such an equilibrium,
i.e. an Eshelby relation is valid in this case provided the reference
configurations are chosen appropriately. Chemical potentials in such m
ixtures of non-fluids are discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
