Abstract
It is shown that the grid temperature determines the desorption rate o f the Spontaneous Desorption for a given sample voltage. The sample te mperature has only a minor effect on the rates. From these observation s it is concluded that SD is mainly a two-step process: ions are sputt ered from the sample surface by keV ions which originate at the grid v ia the temperature dependent field enhanced desorption of adsorbates.
