The effects of chemical compositions and protective coverings on hydro
genous resistance on sintered RE Co magnets have been investigated. It
was shown that both materials were destroyed due to hydrogen influenc
e. There was a latent period, while magnetic properties and constructi
ve integrity remained constant. II was shown that the additions of Dy,
Tb into the RE-Fe-B-M alloy and Gd, Er into the RE-Co alloy reduced h
ydrogenous resistance essentially. On the contrary, the additions of T
i, Nb into the RE-Fe-B-M alloy increased hydrogenous resistance. It wa
s shown that surface protection of magnets by three layers of Ni-Cu-Ni
or by two layers of Ni-Cu allows to use magnets in hydrogenous surrou
ndings. Copyright (C) 1997 International Association for Hydrogen Ener
