Displacement of the tendon of the superficial digital flexor muscle wa
s diagnosed in 9 dogs (10 tarsi). The supporting soft-tissue structure
s were disrupted, allowing medial or lateral displacement of the tendo
n as it passed over the tuber calcanei. Among the breeds of dogs exami
ned, Shetland Sheepdogs were found to be at higher risk for developing
the condition. All dogs had acute onset of lameness, with swelling ov
er the proximal end of the tuber calcanei. Lateral displacement was mo
re common than medial displacment. Nonsurgical treatment was ineffecti
ve in the 5 cases in which it was attempted. Surgical reconstruction o
f supporting soft-tissue structures resulted in return to normal funct
ion.
