C. Guertin et Pj. Albert, FEEDING RESPONSES OF CHORISTONEURA-FUMIFERANA (LEPIDOPTERA, TORTRICIDAE) LARVAE TO SUGAR EXTRACTS FROM DEFOLIATED AND UNDAMAGED WHITE SPRUCE, Journal of economic entomology, 86(5), 1993, pp. 1490-1496
To examine feeding behavior of spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferan
a (Clemens), larvae during their development, we measured feeding pref
erences and feeding rates of early and late instars exposed to foliar
carbohydrate fractions of currently defoliated and undamaged white spr
uce, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss. No significant differences in feeding
preferences of third and sixth instars were found between currently d
efoliated and undamaged trees. Sugar fractions extracted from current-
year and 1-yr-old foliage seem to have the same stimulating effect on
feeding preference for the two instars. On the other hand, significant
differences were found between relative feeding rates of early and la
te instars.
