Js. Fairweather, FACULTY REWARD STRUCTURES - TOWARD INSTITUTIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL HOMOGENIZATION, Research in higher education, 34(5), 1993, pp. 603-623
Data on more than 4,000 full-time, tenure-track faculty in four-year c
olleges and universities were analyzed to examine the relative importa
nce of teaching, research, administration, and service in determining
basic salary, Results showed the dominance of a research-oriented facu
lty reward structure for each type of institution regardless of profes
sed mission. The same research-oriented reward structure was evident i
n each type of discipline. Teaching activities seldom were rewarded; i
n some cases, time spent on teaching was negatively related to salary.
