Sodium carbonate pretreatments of Norway spruce at 165-degrees drastic
ally reduced the subsequent sulfonation reaction and had negative effe
cts on the tensile-tear property of the resulting sulfite chemimechani
cal pulps. Similar results were obtained by the addition of anthraquin
one or anthraquinone-2-monosulfonate to the carbonate pretreatments.
