Abstract
The palladium-catalyzed cyclization of 5-alkyl-5-[2-(o-iodophenylcarba moyl)vinyl] derivatives of Meldrum's acid produces 3-alkylidene oxindo les containing the Meldrum's acid moiety. These compounds can be usefu l synthetic intermediates. An application to the synthesis of function alized carbazoles through the intermediacy of 3,5,6-trisubstituted 2H- pyran 2-ones is reported.
