Active antimicrobial substances contained in Rumex japonicus Houtt. we
re isolated by HPLC. As a result of the identification using MS, H-1 N
MR, and C-13 NMR, trachrysone and 2-methoxystypandrone were found to b
e antimicrobial compounds. Comparison of the antimicrobial spectra of
trachrysone and 2-methoxystypandrone analogs suggested that the antimi
crobial activity of trachrysone and 2-methoxystypandrone analogs was i
nfluenced by the types of functional groups and positions of the hydro
xyl groups.
