Water-soluble copolymers of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and allyl
glycidyl ether were synthesized using radical copolymerization. Molecu
lar masses of synthesized samples were determined via viscosimetric an
d sedimentation measurements. The Mark-Kuhn-Houwink equation constants
for the system studied were compared with those for the copolymer of
diethylaminoethyl methacrylate and for homopolymers of aminoalkyl meth
acrylates. The low polydispersity found (M(z) / M(w) = 1.5 - 1.8) is c
haracteristic of copolymers of allyl monomers and can be explained by
the high probability of these monomers entering the reactions of chain
transfer. The values of the Kuhn segment for the copolymer of dimethy
laminoethyl acrylate and allyl glycidyl ethers, A(av) = 36 x 10(-8) cm
, is on the same order as for the copolymer of diethylaminoethyl metha
crylate.
