The kinetics of cross-linking of powderlike PAN (M(eta) = 6.0 x 10(5))
induced by thermal treatment at 120 - 190-degrees-C under atmospheric
conditions was studied. The induction period of cross-linking was det
ermined, activation energy of this reaction was estimated, and the tem
perature-time interval providing thermal treatment of PAN without the
formation of a marked fraction of cross-links was specified. Compariso
n of the experimental evidence with the published data suggests that c
ross-linking is likely to proceed due to the formation of nitrogen-imi
ne bonds and carbonyl-containing products of polymer degradation.
