Hl. Whitmore, REPRODUCTIVE MANAGEMENT OF COWS SUPPLEMENTED WITH BOVINE SOMATOTROPIN, The Compendium on continuing education for the practicing veterinarian, 15(10), 1993, pp. 1415
Use of bovine somatotropin, a protein hormone, as a supplement for dai
ry cows can increase milk production. Reproductive performance is also
affected by use of the hormone, however. Studies have shown that preg
nancy rate at first service is reduced for cows supplemented with bovi
ne somatotropin. To counter negative effects of bovine somatotropin us
e and to increase herd performance in general, diary producers need to
implement new management strategies.
