Abstract
It is shown that the diffraction efficiency relations for a thick sinu soidal grating can be calculated using just conventional, linear scatt ering theory in the first Born approximation to obtain the coupling re lations between plane waves in the grating, and simple rate equations to account for the multiple scattering phenomena. The results of this analysis agree with the conventional coupled wave analysis based on Ra man-Nath theory.
