Presented are amplitude and phase coding, and flicker measurements of
liquid crystal panels from the commercially available Epson video proj
ector, for configurations maximizing the contrast. For laser illuminat
ion it is found that a contrast as high as 1000 can be achieved, while
for white light illumination it is reduced to a still acceptable valu
e of about 60. However it appears that the flicker should be a more li
miting factor in practical situations. It is also observed that amplit
ude and phase modulation are always coupled.
