The tide investigation is reported under conditions either favourable
to energy transfer from 3BP (benzophenone) to pentacyanonitrosylferrat
e(II), (NP), which gives [Fe(CN)5CH3OH]2-, (LSP), or hydrogen abstract
ion by 3BP from propane-2-ol which gives [Fe(CN)4NO]2-, (TNF). In the
former system naphthalene (NA) quenches the reaction up to its concent
ration < 1.0 x 10(-2) mol dm-3 beyond which phi(LSP) (0.12) is constan
t. In the latter system NA completely quenches the formation of TNF wi
th a concomitant increase in phi(LSP). The experimental data which is
consistent with the proposed mechanism supports the quenching of 3BP a
nd subsequent energy transfer from the resulting 3NA to NP.
