The kinetics of oxidative hydrolysis of aromatic anils by potassium br
omate have been studied in aq. acetic acid (50%, v/v) containing HClO4
(0.20 mol dm-1) at 27 +/- 0.2-degrees-C in the presence of Hg(OAc)2 (
0.01 mol dm-3). The reaction exhibits total second order kinetics-firs
t order in each reactant. The presence of electron withdrawing group l
ike p-NO2 in the aniline portion increases the rate markedly. A mechan
ism involving nitrene intermediate, is proposed to account for the sto
ichiometry and products, namely, benzaldehyde and azobenzene.
