Discovery of the male of Rhabdiopteryx brodskii Zhiltzova has revealed
membership of this species in the genus Kyphopteryx Kimmins, not Mesy
atsia Ricker and Ross, as was believed for some time. Rh. brosdskii is
placed in Kyphopteryx because of close agreement in genitalia with th
e type species, K. dorsalis Kimmins; the description of genitalia of K
. dorsalis is amended. Some spectacular characters so far believed to
identify Kyphopteryx are not present in all included species. The gene
ric concept of Kyphopteryx is accordingly modified; affinities with ot
her Brachypterinae are discussed. Genus Zhiltzovia Ricker and Ross, 19
72 is synonymized with Brachyptera Newport, 1851.
