A. Sher et al., THE STUDY OF COMPLEXATION OF COPPER(II) IONS WITH AMPICILLIN .2. DYNAMICS OF REACTIONS, International journal of pharmaceutics, 99(2-3), 1993, pp. 119-123
In the presence of ampicillin copper(II) ions form different coordinat
ion compounds. Their formation and the properties of particular specie
s were examined by means of UV, Vis and IR spectrometry. The dynamics
of complex formation was studied. Firstly, an unstable blue-violet coo
rdination compound with an absorption maximum at 590 nm was formed, la
ter being transformed into a more stable compound. Hydrolysis of the b
eta-lactam group is promoted by copper(II) and/or hydroxide ions and a
s a result the-ampicillin ligand (L) is transformed into ampicilloic a
cid (L). Consequently, the coordination compounds [CuL]+, CuL2, [CuL3
]- are changed to [CuL]+, CuL*2 and [CuL3*]-, respectively.
